15 Air Disaster Near Misses
The recent Tupolev Tu-154M crash, which took the life of Lech Kaczyński, President of Poland and many other officials has raised major questions about the safety practices of the aviation industry. While in the majority of cases, an aircraft related anomaly usually has fatal consequences but sometimes, owing to sheer luck or crew brilliance, major disaster is averted. Here are some such instances of aircraft disaster near misses.

This Tampa Airlines DC-8 had just taken off when its door blew open. Amazingly, despite the decompression, the plane landed undamaged and everyone survived.

In 1997, this FedEx MD-11 crashed while landing and was completely destroyed. All five passengers survived by escaping through a cockpit window.

During a routine pressurization check, this KC-135 exploded but amazingly the testing crew walked away unharmed. Post-disaster investigations revealed that the testing technician’s pressure gauge didn’t have a max cap so the needle took another trip.

On April 28, 1988, a mid-air fuselage separation on Aloha Flight 243 resulted in explosive decompression. Luckily, the pilot managed to land the plane safely. There was only one fatality, a flight attendant who was sucked out of the plane and her body was never recovered.

Last year’s Hudson river ditching was one of the best examples of crew heroics. All 155 occupants survived and the crew was rightfully awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.

Although the disaster was colossal, it was a near miss for these people who were amongst the only 61 survivors of the greatest ever aviation catastrophe. The collision at Tenerife took the lives of 583 people and forever etched pilot Jacob Van Zanten’s name in infamy.

Last year in Jamaica, this American Airlines plane overshot the runway as it landed and almost went down into the sea. There were no fatalities although most of the occupants sustained injuries. Investigations revealed that the offshore runway guiding lights had been out of order for almost a month.
