Cartoon characters have been burned into the brains of children everywhere. Many adults today have fond memories of Saturday mornings spent lolling in front of the television watching their favourite animated friends. The appeal of many cartoon characters lies in the eye of the beholder. Some viewers, for example, love the characters of “South Park” while others hate their vulgarity. Some adore the wit of Bugs Bunny while others think he's just plain mean. There are several cartoon characters that most people can agree to dislike, however. These nettlesome characters range from classics from the 1940s to characters seen in television animation today. While it may be hard to narrow the list of annoying cartoon characters to 10, here are 10 of the most irritating characters ever to be drawn.
1.
Donald Duck
Walt Disney's enterprise would have been much better off without this garrulous duck, whom no one could understand. Even worse was when Disney introduced Donald's nephews, who took after their uncle in the speech impediment department. Many children have probably grown up wondering if there was something wrong with their hearing or ability to perceive speech when they failed to understand what Donald Duck was saying in the Disney cartoons. In addition to his lack of clarity of speech, Donald Duck never wore pants. What was that supposed to be teaching kids?
2.
Olive Oyl
The biggest question in the entire run of the Popeye series of cartoons is, why in the world were Popeye and Bluto fighting over Olive Oyl? It certainly couldn't be because of her gorgeous looks. Her whiny voice would be enough to drive most men to drink. She was so skinny that a good wind would blow her away. And get a load of the size of her feet! Despite the fact that she treated Popeye horribly, he kept running back to her. Wouldn't it have been nice if he would have left her tied to those railroad tracks just once?
3.
Woody Woodpecker
Talk about an irritating voice. Simply the tone of this bird's voice is enough to turn viewers off. And that laugh – how annoying! This screwball woodpecker pulled cruel pranks on other characters and got away with it, always with that mind-numbing laugh. His appeal is beyond comprehension. This bird also taught kids that being a prankster was cool. Woody Woodpecker was probably responsible for creating many juvenile delinquents in his day.
4.
Road Runner
Many adults today remember watching Saturday morning cartoons as kids and waiting to take a bathroom break until the Road Runner cartoon came on. Characters that don't talk and just chase each other for 15 minutes. How boring! Most kids were smart enough to know the Road Runner was always going to win. If they weren't, then watching the Road Runner was probably the most suitable form of entertainment for them.
5.
Pikachu
The most annoying of all the Pokemon characters, Pikachu is a short, fat, yellow rodent known as the mascot of the entire irritating Pokemon franchise. The appeal of Pokemon boggles the mind. This product of Japanese anime has been featured in the Pokemon cartoons and on subsequent video games, in which players actually get the satisfaction of killing the little yellow rat. Hooray!
6.
Dora the Explorer
This large-headed little girl who runs around constantly wearing a backpack has a grating voice and keeps spouting phrases in Spanish every two minutes. Her ambiguous sexuality is one of the least pressing problems of this irritating character in need of a more fashionable wardrobe. Dora seems to prefer to shout when she speaks, to the dismay of parents everywhere, and repeats the same phrases over and over. It might be considered a learning tool, but it's still annoying.
7.
Brainy Smurf
Any character called “Brainy” is bound to be annoying. Not only was he a genius, but Brainy Smurf was also smug about it in his interactions with all of the other village Smurfs. No one likes someone who thinks he knows everything (but doesn't) and is quick to tell you about it. His voice was whiny and irritating as well. Although he was the object of much-deserved aggression by the other Smurfs, Brainy Smurf was still the most annoying Smurf and certainly one of the most annoying cartoon characters of all time.
8.
Scrappy Doo
The introduction of Scrappy Doo to the Scooby Doo show is a head-scratcher. This large-headed, shrieking, annoying nephew of Scooby Doo added absolutely nothing to the show, even with his “Puppy Power” (whatever that means). With his big head and little arms, he looked like a dinosaur instead of a dog. One wonders what other irrelevant characters the person who came up with Scrappy invented. Jerry's nephew Taffy on “Tom and Jerry?” SpongeBob's cousin Stanley S. Square Pants? Or other marvels of modern animation?
9.
Fat Albert
This Bill Cosby creation debuted in the 1970s and was supposedly based on recollections from Cosby's Philadelphia childhood. The leader of the gang, Fat Albert himself was a rotund kid who always looked older than the rest of the gang and spouted words of wisdom. His trademark “Hey, hey, hey!” got very old after a short period of watching the show. Many children growing up at the time were turned off by Fat Albert. What did this character teach kids in the 70s and 80s except that it was cool to be overweight? Points should be subtracted for his being unrealistic as well.
10.
Porky Pig
A shy, stuttering pig that can't make it through a simple sentence is just too much for many viewers to take. Whatever inspired Looney Tunes to create Porky Pig is beyond understanding. Did his creators really think kids would look up to a pig who had no social skills and couldn't speak properly? And where are his pants? The best part about Porky Pig was that when he said “That's all, folks!” you knew you wouldn't have to put up with watching him anymore.

09 Apr 10 at 03 00 pmWhy is Road Runner on the list but not Wile Coyote? He s no less annoying. I think Sylvester, from Tweety and Sylvester should be on the list too.
