Microsoft To End Bing Cashback
Microsoft has announced that it will end its Bing Cashback program due to a lukewarm response.
The program, which was launched with Live Search back in May 2008, offered cash rebates to online shoppers who bought items by searching them on Bing. It initially attracted more than a 1000 sellers offering rebates.
The technology was originally developed by Jellyfish.com, which Microsoft acquired in 2007.
Microsoft also launched a strong marketing campaign to promote the feature and claimed that it was “showing traction with advertisers and consumers”, but the program kept facing financial issues.
In a blog post, Yusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President, wrote , "When we originally began to offer the cashback feature, it was designed to help advertisers reach you with compelling offers, and to provide a new type of shopping experience that would change user behavior and attract a bunch of new users to Bing".
"But after a couple of years of trying, we did not see the broad adoption that we had hoped for", he admitted.
The Cashback program will expire on July 30th at 9:00 pm PST and Microsoft will continue to provide customer support for 12 more months.
In April 2010, Bing held 9.43% of the US search engine market share, down from 9.62% in March.

No matter how nice Bing becomes, it will always be seen as an inferior Google clone. They need to take a page out of Apple's playbook and start actually LEADING the industry with innovative products. RedHat, Google, Apple, and Mozilla all leaders in the industry, not copiers.

They did try to advertise it, but Diggers kept burying the story thinking it was spam, and everywhere else just kinda let it sit silently. I joined the Jellyfish community almost at its inception and loved it, and then Microsoft bought them out and kinda made things better, primarily by adding stores and improving what was a terrible search functionality. The search is better now, but it leaves a lot to be desired. I would imagine that's what partly lead to its demise: it wasn't too user friendly. I managed to save a couple hundred bucks buying through it, though, and I plan to make one or two more big purchases to keep the extra cashback.
Just because it's the first time you have heard of it doesn't mean Microsoft was advertising incorrectly; you just weren't looking in the right places.

As a CSR for a company for which Bing offered Cashback for Prepaid Minutes purchases, I was constantly alerting my employer that MS had set a requirement that we couldn't provide for the customers, creating angry, escalated communication with us.
Whenever anyone purchased the minutes, by credit card online, MS required a transaction receipt, which, of course, we've never provided. They obviously failed to do their homework, and all it did was cause problems for my employers.
I'm personally extatic to hear that it's no longer available.
