A popular newspaper in Kazakhstan has reported that local scientists have developed a test to determine the presence of pork in food items.

The tests uses plastic sticks to detect presence of molecules only found in pork. Chunks of food can be mixed in water and just like a pregnancy test, the stick changes color.

Kazakhstan is a Muslim majority nation but has a large Christian community too. Consumption of pork is forbidden in Islam but it is readily available in the country. Chefs sometimes adulterate products with pork because it is cheaper than other meats.

The test has not been verified independently yet. It is also not known when the product will be available for consumers.
