Geneva Auction: Rare stamp sold for world record price
An international consortium has bought the world’s most expensive postage stamp in an auction which took place on Saturday in Geneva. The stamp auctioneers did not reveal the identity of the buyers or the price paid by them. They have however maintained that the sale has fetched the highest price ever paid for a stamp.
One of the rarest known stamps, the "Treskilling Yellow" - a version of an 1855 three shilling stamp - was meant to be printed green but was issued by mistake during a print run of eight-shilling stamps, which are yellow. It was last officially sold in Zurich in 1996 at a then record price of $2.3 million.
The stamp was first discovered in 1885 by a 14 year old Swedish schoolboy while searching for stamps in his family’s belongings to sell on for his pocket money. Since then it had periods of fluctuating fortunes, passing through the hands of various prominent figures, including a Romanian King as well as a Belgian tycoon.
The auctioneers, who labeled the stamp as "Mona Lisa of the philatelic world", have asserted it to be the world’s most valuable object by weight. They expected it to sell in the range of 1.5 - 2 million euros. According to them, the seller was delighted with the price he fetched for his sale, while the buyers considered the purchase a solid investment in these times of financial crises.
