Family Of Four Die As House Is Swallowed By Sinkhole
A family in the Quebec village of Saint-Jude has died after their house was swallowed by a hole more than 1600 ft wide and 100 ft deep. Their dog was rescued unharmed.
The family had been watching a hockey game on TV when the crater suddenly opened up, engulfing their house up to the roof in mud and debris. Quebec's associate deputy public security minister Michel C. Doré told reporters that, "They were found very close to one another, some of them lying on the couch in the family room in the basement".
The hole also swallowed three cars, part of a cliff and a stretch of the road. Five other homes have also been evacuated.
The victims were named as dad Richard Prefontaine, wife Lynne and girls Amelie, 11and Anais, 9. The dog 'Ruby' was found caked in mud but unharmed.
Experts have commented that the disaster might have been caused by unstable soils liquefying due to water.
