Canadian Tweeter Wins The Most Beautiful Tweet Award
41-year-old Canadian, Marc MacKenzie, has won the most beautiful tweet award at the Hay festival.
His winning tweet read: "I believe we can build a better world! Of course, it'll take a whole lot of rock, water & dirt. Also, not sure where to put it."
The tweet was selected by broadcaster Stephen Fry, whose own tweets under @stephenfry have attracted 1.5 million followers.
The tweet emerged victorious under stiff competition from SyfretJ's "The blackbird's tweet is fairer yet than all man can muster" and "Beauty is in the mind of the retweeter" by TheEponymousBob.
MacKenzie, who has previously been shortlisted in a tweeting competition in Canada, entered 35 of his tweets in this competition because he was unsure which one was the best.
"What I like about it is how my brain works. Occasionally I have these odd thoughts that come to me and they amuse me so I jot them down. I like sharing them and it's an interesting form to work with.
"A certain percentage of tweets are tired cliche phrases so when they come into my head I think 'That won't do.' I can't stand triteness so I always look for ridiculousness in trite.", he said.
He also stressed that although he actively indulged in social networking, privacy was of utmost importance and he wouldn't want to reveal personal information online.
All entries were sent to the Hay festival's twitter account and were shortlisted using multiple criteria.
The Festival’s founder and director, Peter Florence remarked, "The definition of most beautiful tweet could fall into a number of different categories: it could prove the most eloquent; the most impassioned; the best demonstration of a clever pun or metaphor; the most evocative description of a place or emotion, or perhaps prove that brevity is conducive to levity, and be the wittiest tweet ever committed to the Twittersphere."
The Hay festival is essentially a celebration of literature and arts and is held annually in Hay, Wales. This year's lineup included former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, novelists Zadie Smith, Martin Amis, Hilary Mantel and playwright Tom Stoppard.
