10 Longest Bridges

An expressway situated in Bangkok, Thailand, it is a six-lane bridge that is some 54 km long and is considered one of the longest in the world. It was completed in March, 2000 after a long construction period; it took 18, 00, 000 cubic meters of concrete to build Bang Na Expressway and today it links Chalerm Maha Nakhoon to Bang Pakong.

Located in Southern Louisiana (U.S.A), this Causeway is 38.4 km long with two parallel bridges running along its length. It dates back to the 19th century and is one of the oldest bridge sin the area. Held together by some 9500 concrete piling, it links Metairie to Mandeville. It has been struck by barges on three occasions and each time there was considerable damage.

The Manchac Swamp Bridge is another long bridge in Louisiana that is one of the longest in the world with a length of 36.60 km. It was completed in 1970 and carries the Interstate 55 over the Manchac Swamp in Louisiana. It has been surveyed as being one of the most crowded bridges in America.

Located in and named after the sovereign of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd Causeway is four-lane wide, 8 km long bridge. It was completed in 1986 and took some fifteen years of construction and cost $1.2 billion. Its important for facilitating trade and commerce between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

This South-Korean Bridge is above 2.3 km long and was completed in Ocotber 2009. After a very long period of construction and various structural difficulties in the design which have been overcome, it is now open to public, serving a s adirect link between Songdo and Incheon International Airport.

A cable-stayed bridge in the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, this is the ninth longest bridge in the world with a length of 17.2 km long. It was completed in March 1998, to serve as a celebration landmark for the 500th anniversary of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama’s discovery.

This is a dual carriageway on the island of Penang in Malaysia; it is 13.5 km long and is currently being expanded from four to six lanes. Prior to the completion of this bridge in 1985, the transport between the island and the mainland took place primarily via the State Ferry Service and the bridge has since then facilitated contact between the two, making it more convenient.

An extra-dosed bridge in Melbourne, Australia, it is twice the length of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge with some 850 meters in length. It was completed in mid 1970’s and passes over the Westgate Park, an environmental and recreation facility. Tragedy struck at the construction site when in 1970 a part of the bridge collapsed and fell into the water below, killing some thirty-five workers. This bridge stands as a memory of the construction disaster that was declared a national tragedy.

Situated in Nigeria, the Mainland Bridge is 11.8 km long. It was opened to public by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990 and happens to be the longest of the three bridges connecting Lagos Island. It was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC; there have been recent reports that the Mainland Bridge is now vibrating and is need of urgent repair.
