Libraries are storehouses of information and resources, organized systematically, and maintained by an individual, a group, or an institution, for public use. They were initially known as archives, as they also maintained a record of unpublished books. Some of the famous libraries are listed below:

The Royal Library of Alexandria
The Royal Library of Alexandria, located in Alexandria, Egypt, is probably known as the largest and the most famous library in the ancient world. It is said that the ancient library burned three times over the centuries. A likeness of the ancient library was built in Alexandria and was dedicated on October 16, 2002.

The Boston Public Library is a municipal library located in Boston, Massachusetts, a city in the United States. It opened in 1895. It was the first municipal library in the United States and the first one to loan books and other material to the public. According to a general survey, this library has a collection of 6.1 million books.

Bodleian Library is mainly used as a research library by Oxford University. Bodleian Library is a copyright library, which means it has a right to every book published in the United Kingdom. The Bodleian Library was designed by the architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Construction was completed in 1940.

Folger Shakespeare Library opened in 1932 in Washington DC in the United States. It is known for the largest collection of the printed works of Shakespeare. This library offers the public advanced programs, Shakespeare education, poems, plays and lectures. This library is privately administered by the trustees of Amherst College.

The Library of Congress is the oldest federal institution in the United States and is famous as a research library. It is the largest library in the world, with three buildings, and has the largest number of books. The Library of Congress was established in 1800 in Washington D.C., the capital of the United States. The New York Public Library, located in the United States, is one of the important research libraries in the world. It has one of one of the largest research systems. It is a non profit corporation and is privately managed. It is the twenty-sixth largest library in the United States, according to the American Library Association.
