They may all have the same objective of conquering the worlds and ruling the galaxies, ending all humanity, or taking out revenge for some twisted old reason – but we never can get enough of them. Following is a list of 10 such nemeses and arch rivals who were either brutally vicious or diabolical geniuses and gave the gamers some headaches and pains in the you know where.
1. Bowser - Mario series
As of now he may come across as cuddly and good enough for a personalized stuff toy, but there was a time when Bowser was a feared nemesis in the domain of video games. Mario had to cross different worlds, eat mushrooms, fight a weird animal species which was a cross between rabbits and turtles, encounter giant man eating plants which dwelled inside sewage pipes, and eventually take on the Bowser. Turns out the Bowser had a crush, as large his own self, on the princess who was also the object of Mario’s affection. The diminutive Maria against the king size Bowser is always a sight to savor.
If you had issues and vendettas against half a dozen of the best fighters from around the world, you are naturally bound attract some unwanted attention. M Bison was introduced in the phenomenal Street Fighter II which shook the very foundation of video games due to its international cast of players. Chief of his underground crime consortium, Shadaloo, he aims to control the governments of the world so they do his bidding; but not if Guile and company can help it.
The game was never the same after Shoa Kahn; his malevolent cackles and chants of “you make me laugh” are still vividly remembered by gamers. Emperor of the out world, Shao Kahn had the ability to consume souls, was viciously powerful, and held knowledge of black magic. His powers severely debilitated, he had a lesser role to play in the later game, and the series once favorite among gamers, lost its charm.
Turn coats are always loathed. But when you reveal your true colors against your own friends at the most critical of times and even turn out to be responsible for the mess they’re in the middle of, then you’re in for it. Albert Wesker, in a bid to become more than human and reach a certain degree of immortality, experimented on himself with the T Virus and its variants. Those who have played the game know all too well; when Wesker is close, trouble isn’t too far behind.
This one really got under your skin. The idea of this evil villain was so unique it amazed the gamers all around the world. Psycho Mentis would do things that would scare the living day lights out of you; like reading your mind and your next move, by making the screen go blank, and reading the memory card and telling you your very own past history! He may be called a Psycho, but he was a Psycho that took the fight from a virtual to a personal level.
They all have their own reasons for doing what they do; Sephiroth’s was that since his birth was the result of a genetic experiment, he had the right to destroy the entire world and end up as a god in the process. Some even argue that it is next to impossible to kill a villain who possesses a sword longer than his own self. In his quest he heartlessly killed the most lovable character of the entire game, skyrocketing himself to the level of a super villain.
7. Shodan - System Shock Series
A villain with a snotty, dry, sarcastic and bitchy sense of humor that insults you even when you are doing everything right; meet Shodan. Even though the computers-take-over-the-world routine seems like it had been overdone to oblivion, Shodan gave it a new dimension altogether with her creepy voice, devilish yet sci-fi outlook, and the ability to operate and manipulate every single piece of technological equipment that she can lay her hands on, and using it against you. Your self-respect will have to endure some sever blows once you dare to play this game and face Shodan.
He is an embodiment of the classical game villains in a game that keeps things conventional yet classy. If you’ve played the game you will know all too well that every single battle against Ganon is nothing short of an epic. The effort required to kill this diabolic monster is so arduous in nature that that the gamers are simply left crying out “is he ever going to die!”. His diabolic, intimidating looks and the brute strength that he possesses ear him a place on this list.
9. Lich King - Warcraft
What makes the Lich King so amazing are not the mere facts that he has a daunting demeanor, vicious strength, and astounding powers, but also that the story lines and game quality enforce it to such an extent that that impact of it turns out be amazingly realistic on the gamers. Although the character of The Lich King is a merge of what was initially two distinct creatures they were later joined together to form this one ostensibly relentless nightmare.
She’s a blend of all things evil; an artificially intelligent computer, a two-timing turn-coat, and an array of evil ambitions. Initially appearing to be a voice guide and a helpful resource to Chell, the main playing character of the game, GlaDos slowly and gradually starts to take a harder line and even goes to the extent of misguiding Chell altogether. All ambiguities are however cleared when GlaDos shows her open hostility and declares an all out war against Chell by making numerous attempts to kill him. Destroying GlaDos is Chell’s ultimate aim and trust me that’s not as clear cut as a picnic basket.
